There is nothing to be worried about as far as your computer getting infected or anything like that. This attack started late on July 31, 2010 as far as I can tell is over now. At this time, I am still unsure as who broke security on my server, but the security team at my host is looking over it. This new version comes with a built in firewall with many settings for advanced users or you can set it up to do everything on its own. I have installed this in business office and they have said that they could tell an immediate difference between it and their old antivirus program. However, since I updated to Vipre 4 (I have only the Antivirus and not the firewall), I have not been able to get automatic definition updates. Well, as long as the hard drive is somewhat readable, meaning no scratching or internal parts damaged beyond repair, there may be a way to save all of your pictures, do(edited)ents, and other important files. Over the years, I have used countless programs, cds, and hours trying to recover valuable data from corrupted hard drives and discs. I am currently in the process of testing out a program called Active@ Partition Recovery and Active@ File Recovery. One of my customers has had his computer for at least 7 years if not longer, so you can imagine the amount of valuable data that is on the drive. Here's the situation: Power supply went out about a week ago, easy fix. We replaced the power supply. Then, we powered on the system. It booted into windows, and said that it had just finished updating and needed to reboot. Again, normal, so we rebooted the machine. Everything was going fine, BIOS recognized the hard drive, acted like it was going to boot, then "Insert system disk and press any key to continue"... UH OH, not good. Luckily, I have other old hard drives laying around, so I put one in, reinstalled the operating system to the newly inserted drive, slaved the original drive, and booted the machine. Again, BIOS shows the drive, Windows Device Manager shows the drive and installs the drivers, but no drive in My Computer or in Disk Management. I tried varying versions of Linux partition software and boot discs. I tried several windows programs to fix the boot section and partition tables, all to no avail. The program that I found that would actually read the partition and hard drive information was Active@ Partition Recovery. At the time of writing this, it is in the process of creating a RAW disk image. More to come in the next couple of days. *Update* The program worked well as far as finding the default file extensions. It was able to recover many of the pictures, audio files, and documents. However, my main concern was being able to recover my clients email from Outlook Express and Thunderbird. I was not able to recover these files partially due to the fact that the 20 GB hard drive was very badly damaged. The hard drive had thousands of damaged sectors. It had also lost the MBR and the complete partition tables so accessing the files was difficult to say the least. I would still give the program high marks just for what it was able to find. The main reason for having the file online is so that we are not asking you everything as we need it. As a note on privacy, we will only keep the do(edited)ent for 60 days at which time we will delete it from email, computers, and any hard copies that we used, unless specific permission was given to keep it on file. This form will only be used by us and not distributed to anyone. The only time we will ask for any passwords other than the system password is if we are setting up email accounts or setting up Internet accounts. Currently the latest build is 10.51, which in my opinion is a downgrade from previous versions. Most of my pages do not load properly, ie takes much too long for the page to show up or I have to click "Stop" in order to get the page to show up at all. Another annoyance that I have found is that the previous versions kept the taskbar clean and only used one window for the browser much like firefox does. Now however, Opera is acting more like the dreaded Internet Explorer and has one taskbar icon for each tab opened. While many people may not see these issues as such, having developed websites for years, it's the little things that become the most annoying. When changing the looks of a website, it takes away precious time if you have to hit stop just to see what your changes look like and even then it sometimes won't load everything. While I have used Opera since Version 8.?? and actually purchased it, I have not been using it quite as often as I had in those days. The Opera team has made many new features available, but in my opinion, too many options are just as bad as not enough options. *Edit* While there has been a new version released (10.53), Opera still does not load some of my secure sites very well. I have had to modify the security settings to allow all types of TLS and SSL just for it to load my management page for my websites. It is currently loading the secured pages but it is still taking too much time in my opinion. This problem is not caused by a virus or administrator controls normally. One of the main causes is the removal of the Google Chrome browser. When the Chrome browser is installed, it changes some of the registry entries for handling of html files and thereby changing the way links are processed.
